Why learning German is a good idea
Let’s start with a few facts
German is spoken by around 120 million people around the world. The native speakers mostly live in Germany (83 million – that makes it the most widely spoken language in Europe!) but you will also find them in Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg. And many more speak it as a second language because German is the language of business, economy and science.
Love at first sound?
OK, maybe it is not a language of music, but it is easy enough for an English speaker to learn. Why? Because English and German are related. Ich studiere Marketing an der Universität und ich lerne Deutsch. See? Do you know what we mean? Ja? Gut! Wir beginnen!
So, the language of business?
Yes. Made in Germany and all. Speak to your German business partners in their native language: you will experience a better cultural understanding and barrier-free communication. And this means a better chance to get a job in Germany – you have made the effort to learn their language. Danke! Knowing German, even just the basics, means that you are curious, motivated and open to new cultures. And that’s what employers are looking for!
Looking for a job?
In the UK, not many people speak foreign languages. That’s why you will stand out with German on your CV. We just said it: it means you can work with people from different cultures, you are open to new challenges and want to go the extra mile. And if you add to it some international experience (study or work placement abroad?), you could be THE ideal candidate. It’s just a few hours a week. And then you can have a beer (Bier) or read a book (Buch). Any job (Job) could be yours. Develop the skills that really count and enjoy your career (Karriere)!
